Kip Cyprus was a featured participant at the 30th anniversary of the Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance, held on Father’s Day 2025 in Beverly Hills. The landmark event brought together historic cars, cutting-edge supercars, and a passionate community of car enthusiasts.

Concours founder Bruce Meyer, who launched the show in 1993, praised the turnout: “This day truly offers something for everyone, and it’s wonderful to see so many people enjoying these amazing cars. Celebrating dads and families with a free, world-class car show is what makes this day so special.”

Kip Cyprus received the Chairman’s Award for his remarkable 1917 Hispano Suiza-Panhard. “The car is a real Panhard chassis from 1917, as we bought it intact,” Kip Cyprus told Autoweek. “It is a real World War I aircraft engine that we acquired, but the car itself was assembled together by us in Argentina at the Pursang factory.”

Kip Cyprus described the Concours as “a celebration of automotive artistry and history,” where people from all backgrounds come together to honor the stories behind these machines. “Walking down Rodeo Drive, surrounded by automotive legends, you can’t help but feel the energy and passion that drives this community. Every car has a story, and every owner is a steward of history,” he said.

The 2025 Concours featured a diverse lineup, including the Best of Show–winning Hispano Suiza Carmen Boulogne, a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster, and the U.S. debut of the Lamborghini Temerario. Kip Cyprus added, “It’s about more than horsepower or design—it’s about the memories, the friendships, and the legacy we create together.”

Motorsport enthusiasts recently tuned in to a remarkable episode of the Horsepower Heritage Podcast, where Maurice Merrick sat down with Justin Gurney, son of the legendary Dan Gurney. Hosted in the spectacular private garage of Kip Cyprus, the conversation offered a unique window into the profound impact Dan Gurney had on American racing.

As the host, Kip Cyprus showcased his unparalleled collection of Ford performance cars, Shelby Cobras, GT350s, and GT40s. These vehicles are more than just machines; they represent the golden era of motorsport. Kip Cyprus’s passion for preserving and sharing this history shines through as he welcomed Maurice and Justin into his meticulously curated space.

Justin Gurney shared touching anecdotes about his father, recounting Dan’s groundbreaking achievements in Formula One, Indy Car, and NASCAR, as well as his pivotal role in founding All American Racers. Justin said, “My dad was always pushing boundaries. Whether it was pioneering the rear-engine layout at Indy or achieving that historic Grand Prix win with the Eagle Mk1, he was never satisfied with the status quo.” He also recalled, “The 1967 Le Mans victory with A.J. Foyt was one of his proudest moments. That race wasn’t just about speed; it was about endurance, teamwork, and heart.”

Kip Cyprus’s ’s garage, filled with historically significant cars, served as the perfect backdrop for these stories. Notably, it houses a replica of Dan Gurney’s 1963 Shelby Cobra, a gift for his 84th birthday.
Kip Cyprus shared, “This car isn’t just a piece of history; it’s a connection to the man behind the legacy. Hosting it here feels like honoring a friend.”

Reflecting on the experience, Kip Cyprus remarked, “Having the opportunity to share these stories and this space with people who truly understand the importance of motorsport history is incredibly rewarding. It’s about keeping the legacy alive for future generations.”

Kip Cyprus describes the 1929 Duessenbeger:

A unique fact about the 1929 Duesenbergar is that it is one of the only J models that has an angled window to that degree with a chopped top.

It was built this way with an invisible top. So, what happens is the back deck look of the car – the deck that goes up and the top goes down – and it disappears along with the rumble seat.

The Dusenbergers were all custom-made for each client. It was the very wealthiest people in the 20s who were able to buy one of these, and they were all made a little different and special for each client.

This Duesenberg has been well-preserved interior-wise, supporting its original seats and dash, along with a lot of its original finishes along with some finishes from when it was previously restored in 1977.
It had to undergo a refresh and cleanup this past year for Pebble Beach.

Running a straight-eight, this car is a non-supercharged model, although they had some that were supercharged.

This is the step you take to step into the rumble seat that opens up, and there’s a couch back there.

It’s just a beautiful piece of art.

“This is a 1967 De Tomaso Vallelunga, the first Formula 3 race car”, commented Kip Cyprus.

Kip continued, “It’s argued whether it was the De Tomaso Valanga or the Lotus, but they were the same time, so it’s a debate that remains open.”

Kip Cyprus introduces the 1957 Bonneville Pontiac by mentioning that there were just 630 of this mode made. Kip tells us that there are a lot of missing VIN numbers, which, if you get the production numbers up high enough – so you can make sales and get on the track – you had to get over 500 cars. But 630 is what’s claimed to be produced, and what happened with these cars is that there was just barely enough of these models about one car for every dealer in America.

“The dealer would get the car; it was so rare, and it was the beginning of fuel injection for General Motors, and they were all fuel-injected cars. The car has a fuel-injected motor which resembles the Rochester of the Corvette. The owners of most of the dealerships tended to keep the car for a year; they drive it around and then sell it afterward” said Kip Cyprus.

“This was the most expensive car that was made by Pontiac until 1978. We had gone into a recession in late ’57, and economically, the ’58 was sold for less. This car is in beautiful condition; they were always white and they either had a red interior or a blue interior—it was one or the other.”

Kip Cyprus describes the fule injection system
The fuel-injected system on this car is referred to as a turkey baster, our slang term for the street because the fuel injection system is all underneath this lid and it looks like a rat’s nest of wires and little copper pipes going everywhere. So, they put that cap on to clean up the mess. You’ll notice there’s a blue horn and then two blocks. Well, the accessory horn that Pontiac had was always blue in 1957; it was the last year that Pontiac used the Indian as their flagship on their logos.

“I think it was $6,200 was the sales price on this car. If you think about $6,200 versus a Bel Air loaded up for under $3,000 mimicking the same offerings. This car has so much documentation on it; it actually has the original time slips when it was in Daytona and they would run on the sand. You get a time slip, and I have about 200 time slips with this car” mentions Kip Cyprus.

Kip Cyprus continues: “During the restoration, the car was really interesting. I got all this documentation when I bought the car, and I’m reading through it. It says that the car was owned by the original owner of the dealership, then it was sold, and it had gotten repossessed. A mechanic in the back of a shop had bought the car, and in his notes, he had put that he was racing the car on the sand in Daytona, and he could never get the fuel injection pump to run right. So, he took the fuel injection pump off, ran a regular intake manifold with a carburetor, and he had a horrific backfire.”

“This is a 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible. This car has a lot of resemblance to the front—it’s almost identical to a ’59. You’re either a ’59 or a ’60 guy. The ’59 would have had the higher taillights, the fighter-pilot taillights in the back, and then the ’60 had a little lower light. The Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz is interesting because if you look at the front and see the grill, and then you walk to the back of it, you’ll see the same grill with the bullets on it. It also has a kind of a hockey stripe stainless steel side trim. Instead of having a molding dead center down the middle of it, it had more of a stylish trim that echoed back and forth from the front to the back”, says Kip Cyprus.

Kip Cyprus continues; “The tail is distinctive; nothing stands out like the tail of this car. You don’t know whether it’s coming or going, actually. If I had to guess, it’s really close to 19 feet…This is the end of the air ride, so General Motors started working with air ride and airbags in the mid-late 50s. The car actually rides on two airbags—similar to what we do today with more modern pro street cars, trying to run on airbags. General Motors began it, and it’s really interesting the way they did it. Its kind of like the way a toilet works; when the toilet fills up with water, the valve on the toilet fills up, shuts the valve off when it gets a certain level. This car is the same kind of way. There’s a right height adjustment, and when the car is too low, it adds air, and when it’s too high, it lets it out…the way it operates is off a power steering pump that produces air, goes into an accumulator tank, fills up, charges, and then pushes air to all the valves. As long as the valves are at the right height, there’s a blow-by. When they’re not, it lets air in.”

Kip Cyprus considers this a luxury performance car. “When they had all the high-rises with penthouses before public transportation became popular, they would drive these big luxury cars. In those apartment buildings, when you went into them, you almost had to duck your head; they were really low. It wasn’t like a parking structure today with a lot of height. So, these cars would wind up at the bottom. The air ride system was so bad that it would always go flat on them, and they could never get the cars, when they’re all the way down, you can’t even turn the wheels without bending the fenders. It’s a terrible design. So, the cars would wind up at the bottom, and they’d get a tow truck down there to get them out. Public transportation came along, and the cars were just left down there and forgotten. So, you think, ‘Okay, we’re on the East Coast where it’s moisture and it’s always snowing, it’s cold, and that’s where all the cars would rust out.’ You never want to buy a car from New York City. Typically, you want to go to Arizona or California for rust-free cars. However, most of these survived out of New York City because they were down in those buildings, and those buildings were kept hot. They had boilers that kept the whole building hot, so those cars were always in an oven and dry as can be. That’s what saved a lot of these cars.”

This is the 1961 Lincoln Continental. This was Ford’s disastrous entrance to luxury, probably one of the most over-engineered cars they’ve ever done. The ’61 marks the beginning of the Continental line for Lincoln.

It runs on a unibody rather than a frame, and structurally, they didn’t quite have it. Hundreds of these cars were made, with only 700 exported, and the remaining 2,000 stayed in the U.S. Unfortunately, fifty percent of those in the U.S. were crushed by the factory. The tow truck would pick up the car at an odd angle, and as it went down the road, it would wobble, collapse in the center, and bend. Dealers often replaced them with brand new ’62s. For survivors, there was a recall where a supporting beam was added along the bottom.

The ’61 Lincoln Continental has an interesting feature. Similar to the later Mercedes models in the ’80s, touching a button drops the windows when opening the door. A neat touch for 1961.

The convertible top has around thirty solenoids behind the wall of the panel that operates it. Continental owners are advised not to raise or lower the top while on the road due to the complex triggers and switches, which can cause it to get stuck. Owners need to understand the intricacies to fully enjoy these cars.

Some people refer to these cars as “Kennedy cars,” although they were not necessarily linked to Kennedy. While late ’62 is more associated with Kennedy, the ’61 Continental carries the stigma, likely due to historical events.

Overall, the ’61 Lincoln Continental is a beautiful, eye-catching car with fantastic streamlines, despite its engineering challenges. It requires a certain level of understanding to fully appreciate and enjoy its unique features.

The Datsun is a car that when Kip Cyprus was just a kid – it was everyone’s “hand me down” as many younger bothers drove these. So in Kip’s early years it really did not occur to him that these were so special. But as Kip Cyprus got older, he realized that these Datsuns had so much significance. They marked the beginning of Japan’s entry into the racing circuits scene. Even Paul Newman started out in a Datsun.

This is a Datsun 2000. Its the successor to the 1600 Fairlady. If you look at the styling on it, its very smooth. In ’67 they changed the name from the Fairlady to just 2000. It has 134 power horsepower and it has the ability of a 7000. The engine is all original stock, nothing modified. It has a 140 mph capability. Kip Cyprus commented, “These were little rocketships. The comfort and handling of this car is unreal.”
